About Our Opportunity
Reporting to the Team Lead, Machine Design, you will be an integral part of EastPoint’s engineering team, supporting the design and delivery of custom machinery and mechanical systems for our manufacturing and industrial clients. Working with an experienced design team, you will participate in all project phases, from concept and feasibility through detailed design, fabrication support, installation, and commissioning.
Primary Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting site reviews for manufacturing and industrial clients and developing solutions using modern technology to best address their machine design challenges.
- Creating and detailing 3D models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks.
- Designing custom machinery, tooling, fixtures, and mechanical systems tailored to client needs.
- Preparing bills of materials (BOMs), design packages, and technical documentation.
- Performing tolerance analysis, materials selection, and mechanical calculations to support robust designs.
- Collaborating with engineers, fabricators, and project managers to ensure manufacturability and compliance with standards.
- Participating in design reviews, prototyping, troubleshooting, and testing.
- Supporting clients and/or client sub-contractors through all stages of installation, from fabrication to installation at the client site.
- Participate in system start-up, verification, and machine/process commissioning activities at client facilities.
- Providing training for machine operators and maintainers on newly installed and commissioning machines/processes.
- Establishing and maintaining solid working relationships with clients, ensuring their needs are met with quality and reliability.
- Participating in developing proposals, technical reports, specifications, and cost estimates while seeing projects through from start to finish.
- Contributing to process improvements, design standards, and innovation within the Machine Design team by providing insight and mentorship, ensuring the highest technical standards are achieved.
- Completing project designs on schedule and within budget.
- Identify, analyze and mitigate project risks.
- Ensure that safety is a top priority and work is carried out in accordance with the EastPoint approaches, applicable codes, and client standards and polices.
Skills / Training Requirements
As a Mechanical Engineering Technologist on our Machine Design team, your hands-on approach, technical creativity, and problem-solving mindset allow you to thrive in a collaborative environment. You bring a strong foundation in machinery design and enjoy applying your skills across a variety of industrial applications. You possess the following:
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology from an accredited college.
- Minimum of 4 years of applicable experience in mechanical design, preferably within machinery or industrial equipment design.
- Ability to obtain a minimum of Reliability status through CISD within six (6) months. This is a requirement for employment.
- Registration as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) with TechNova (Nova Scotia) or the ability to obtain registration with TechNova by transferring from another jurisdiction.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks (assemblies, part modeling, drawings, and PDM systems) and in the various MS Office 365 Applications.
- Strong knowledge of GD&T, mechanical drafting standards, and manufacturing processes (machining, welding, sheet metal).
- Experience preparing BOMs, design documentation, and fabrication packages.
- Familiarity with FEA, automation equipment, pneumatics, hydraulics, or motion systems considered an asset.
- Capacity to troubleshoot mechanical issues, both on site and remotely by voice or video call.
- The ability to confidently apply experiences based on previous works to new sectors of endeavor.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate with clients, colleagues, and vendors.
- Strong organizational skills to balance priorities and meet deadlines across multiple projects.
